If you haven't heard, Tate really likes rockets ("crockets" as he calls them) and shuttles. After viewing countless shuttle launches on YouTube, David and I also became enthralled. We decided it would be really cool to take Tate (and me!) to a shuttle launch. Especially since the shuttle program will be coming to a close after just two (maybe three) launches.
David grew up in Orlando so he got to see several shuttle launches from his yard, but never close up. And since his parents still live there (and his brother just down the street), we thought it would be great to visit them and all view the launch together. Kennedy Space Center is just an hour's drive from their house.
So, the Hartleys headed down to Orlando in early Nov. in hopes of seeing the Discovery launch. As you know, the timing of a shuttle launch can be very touch and go. It was going to launch in late Nov. 1st, then 2nd, and so on. David was running out of vacation days so we finally had to hang it up and go home. Lucky for us, the Discovery is still on the ground and now going to launch no earlier than Feb. 27th. Looks like another road trip!
While we were down there, we thought we would at least go to Kennedy Space Center and see the shuttle and all the center has to offer. We got two-day passes and on the first day, we went with David's parents and our nephew, Jonathan. Then David, Tate and I went back another day to make sure we didn't miss anything. Overall, we had a great time there and a great visit with David's family. Here's some highlights from our KSC visits.
